On September 11, 2001, as the sun rose, 246 people boarded their morning flights, 2,606 headed to their jobs in bustling offices, and hundreds of first responders—343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and 8 paramedics—prepared for another routine day of serving their communities. By 10:00 a.m., their lives, along with the lives of so many others, were cut tragically short.

For those of us who lived through that day, the memories remain vivid—where we were, what we were doing, and the sinking feeling that nothing would ever be the same. It was a moment that brought us face-to-face with the fragility of life and the unpredictability of our world.
