In the story of Al Gettier, the spirit of dedication and ingenuity shines through. As a young 1st Lieutenant stationed at Enewetak Atoll, Al's contribution to the radiological cleanup mission was marked by precision.
As the Executive Officer at Runit from December 1978 to May 1979, Al took on a challenge when tasked with recalculating the layout of a wall around a crater, programming a Hewlett Packard PC to perfect its design. This level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, particularly under the watchful eyes of a General, exemplifies his drive to ensure every task was performed with excellence.
Six days of arduous work each week didn't deter him.Â
Despite the relentless workload, Al found pride in the meaningful contributions he made to the mission, knowing his efforts helped shape the island’s future. His time at Enewetak fostered a deep sense of accomplishment as he played a vital role in restoring the area after atomic testing. His experience there became an essential chapter in his life, blending military duty with personal satisfaction.
Outside of his military career, Al's passion for aviation and innovation continued to flourish. Having earned his private pilot's license for both airplanes and gliders, and having delved into skydiving, his sense of adventure knew no bounds. His love for flying reflected the same determination and precision he exhibited during his service. After leaving the Army, Al transitioned to a career in computers, showcasing his adaptability and pursuit of knowledge.
As a devoted husband, celebrating nearly 40 years of marriage, and a father to two adult daughters, Al's commitment extends well beyond the field of service. Now, a proud grandfather, he reflects on a life well-lived, rich with experiences that shaped not only his career but his approach to family and community.
Al Gettier’s journey is a reminder of the power of perseverance, creativity, and precision. His dedication to his work, both in the Army and beyond, stands as an inspiring example for future generations. Today, free from the burdens of health issues related to his service, he remains a shining testament to the resilience of those who served at Enewetak, ensuring the history of their work will never be forgotten.
