RIP Honor Atomic Veteran Gary Lee Ridgeway

A Legacy of Service, Sacrifice, and Family


Born on October 10, 1943, in Fairfield, Iowa, Gary Lee Ridgeway lived a life defined by duty, honor, and commitment. After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1963, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1973, where he served as a surveyor. One of the pivotal moments in his career came in 1977, when he was deployed to Enewetak Atoll, tasked with surveying and helping build a base for the nuclear cleanup effort.


During this perilous mission, Gary demonstrated unwavering dedication, contributing to the cleanup of nuclear waste in the Marshall Islands, known as the "Toxic Paradise." His work, along with that of thousands of fellow service members, helped restore the island and secure the safety of future generations.


Gary's life extended beyond his military service. He was a loving husband to Debra Ann Watkins and a devoted father to their children, Dawn, Anthony, and Nick Ridgeway, born in 1976. He carried the same dedication to his family as he did to his country, ensuring that his values of selflessness and commitment were passed down to future generations.


Gary’s legacy lives on through his family, who proudly remember his courage, sacrifice, and service. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that the actions of one individual, driven by a sense of duty, can leave an enduring impact that resonates far beyond their lifetime. He is remembered not just for his military accomplishments but also for the love and values he imparted to those closest to him.
