Protective gear on Enewetak was a luxury, and soldiers like Jeffrey Dean toiled in sweltering temperatures that often reached up to 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Their attire consisted of little more than boots, cut-off fatigues, and a boony cap. They handled highly radioactive material without adequate protection, unaware of the risks they were taking.
