Glimmer of Lights: Atomic Veteran Kirk McCann

Kirk McCann, a retired US Army Combat Engineer, recounts his harrowing experience during the Enewetak Atoll Atomic Debris Cleanup Mission of 1978-79. With just one year of military service, the young E-4 volunteered for the mission, unaware of the potential dangers he and his comrades would face.

From the outset, the lack of protective gear and safety protocols was concerning. Unlike the images often associated with radiation protection—such as "banana suits" and gas masks—Kirk and his fellow soldiers were given none of this equipment. They were told the islands had been "cleaned," and that the environment was safe. Their only warning: "Don't eat the dirt."

Their mission involved a massive cleanup, clearing debris left from World War II and decades of nuclear testing. However, Kirk found it hard to believe that no risks existed, especially considering the atoll’s history of nuclear detonations. It wasn’t until years later, when he reconnected with fellow veterans and did his own research, that Kirk realized the full extent of the dangers they had been exposed to.

As he reached out to other Enewetak veterans, Kirk learned about the serious health problems many were now facing, including cancers and other illnesses likely linked to their radiation exposure. These revelations motivated him to share his story and advocate for the recognition and compensation these veterans deserve. One story in particular struck a chord: a bank employee whose father had served on Enewetak, later dying of cancer—a fate shared by too many who had served there.

The fight for recognition has been long and difficult. Kirk emphasized the lack of proper documentation and the challenges veterans face in proving their health claims. Without adequate records, countless veterans are struggling to get the compensation and healthcare they rightfully need and deserve.

Kirk's experience is a reminder of the negligence and lack of transparency surrounding the Enewetak mission. He continues to advocate for the proper recognition, compensation, and medical support for the veterans who participated in this hazardous operation. His story is a powerful call to action, urging that the sacrifices made during this mission be brought out of the shadows and into the light.
