In Tribute and Honor to Atomic Veteran Steve Welch: A Dedicated Communicator and Servant of Enewetak Atoll
"Connecting Islands, Building Bonds, Leaving a Legacy."
Steve Welch, E-4 in the United States Army, served with steadfast dedication as a 26L10 Communications Specialist with C Company, 84th Engineer Battalion on Enewetak Atoll. From September 1977 to February 1978,
Steve played an instrumental role in ensuring communication lines were maintained and operational on this remote mission.
His work, establishing the HF multi-channel communications system between the main island and Lojwa, was crucial for the Enewetak cleanup operation. Reliable communication was essential for coordination, safety, and support, and Steve’s expertise helped bridge the distances across the islands.
Beyond his communications duties, Steve extended his service by helping operate the MARS (Military Affiliate Radio System) station, facilitating messages for personnel to connect with loved ones back home. His dedication to maintaining these connections reflects his understanding of the importance of morale and support, especially in an environment as isolated as Enewetak. His work not only helped ensure mission success but also reminded his fellow service members that they were never truly alone.
Steve’s contribution didn’t stop there. He took on additional roles within the community, working part-time with the Holmes and Narver Corporation, stocking the package store and bar. His willingness to lend a hand wherever needed exemplified the camaraderie and spirit of teamwork that defined the Enewetak mission. In this small, tightly knit community, Steve’s efforts helped create a sense of normalcy, making life a little easier and more comfortable for everyone stationed there.
Today, Steve’s service stands as a testament to the essential, yet often unseen, roles that support a successful mission. His work connecting Enewetak and Lojwa ensured smooth operations and bolstered the morale of his fellow service members. He remains an example of resilience, adaptability, and quiet strength—qualities that continue to inspire. Steve’s story highlights the significance of communication, both technical and human, in the success of challenging military operations, as well as the enduring bonds formed in service.
Steve Welch’s name on this roster serves as a reminder of the valuable contributions of those who support from behind the scenes. His legacy is one of connection, dedication, and unwavering service to his mission and his team. We honor Steve’s commitment and the positive impact he left on Enewetak, a lasting tribute to his role in one of the most demanding environmental rehabilitation efforts of its time.
“To Steve Welch, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Your service in establishing communication networks and supporting your community on Enewetak Atoll will not be forgotten. You exemplified dedication, connecting islands and people alike. Your work made a difference, bringing comfort and coordination to a challenging mission. Thank you, Steve, for your steadfast commitment, resilience, and the connections you fostered that remain long after the mission was completed.”
