Lee Jay Butt, an E-4 in the United States Army, served with distinction as a 61B10 Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic during the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project. From April 1, 1979, to August 30, 1979, he was stationed on Lojwa Island, where he operated the LARC-60, a vital amphibious vehicle used for transporting personnel, equipment, and contaminated materials across the atoll's islands.


The LARC-60 (Lighter, Amphibious Resupply, Cargo) is a 60-ton capacity amphibious vehicle designed to transport heavy loads from ship to shore and across varied terrains. Its unique capabilities were essential in the challenging environment of Enewetak Atoll, facilitating the movement of materials and personnel necessary for the cleanup operations.


Lee's role as a LARC-60 operator involved transporting military personnel and equipment to designated work sites on islands such as Enewetak, Lojwa, and Runit. His responsibilities also included the critical task of moving contaminated materials to designated drop-off points, ensuring the safe and efficient handling of hazardous substances.
