Living Tribute and Honors for Atomic Veteran Kevin Edward Veltman

"Flying for Duty, Serving with Courage."

Kevin Edward Veltman, a Warrant Officer and Medivac (Medical Evacuation) Pilot, served with unwavering dedication during his deployment to Enewetak Atoll as part of the 84th Engineer Battalion. From January 1 to June 30, 1979, Kevin played a critical role in the cleanup operations, piloting utility helicopters across the remote and scattered islets of Enewetak Atoll.

As a Medivac Pilot—aptly nicknamed the "Body Snatchers" for their challenging missions—Kevin's service required exceptional skill, precision, and composure. His duties included medical evacuation, personnel transport, and logistical support to the cleanup crews working tirelessly in a radiologically hazardous environment. Flying a UH-1 utility helicopter, Kevin landed on nearly every islet in the atoll, connecting isolated teams and ensuring critical medical and operational needs were met.

The mission on Enewetak demanded more than technical expertise; it required a deep sense of purpose and resilience. Pilots like Kevin were lifelines for the teams stationed across the atoll, ensuring their safety, providing timely medical support, and contributing to the overall success of the cleanup effort. His ability to navigate the unique challenges of flying in such remote conditions underscored his dedication to duty and his commitment to his fellow servicemen and women.

Beyond the cockpit, Kevin’s role symbolized hope and security for those on the ground. His presence reassured the teams that help was always within reach, no matter how daunting the task or remote the location. His flights across Enewetak Atoll embodied the spirit of service, connecting people and operations in the shared mission of restoring the islands.

"Kevin Edward Veltman’s service as a Medivac Pilot on Enewetak Atoll exemplifies the courage and commitment of those who took to the skies to support their fellow servicemen. His dedication to the mission and his skill as a pilot remain a testament to the strength and unity of those who answered the call to duty in the face of extraordinary challenges."
