RIP Honor Atomic Veteran David A. Bombard

A Life Dedicated to Duty, Family, and the Great Outdoors

In the rolling farmlands of Wisconsin, David A. Bombard was born on May 31, 1958, and grew into a man whose life would be defined by duty, honor, and commitment. He answered the call of service on November 1, 1976, joining the U.S. Army as a combat engineer. His journey would lead him to the Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands, where he undertook the hazardous mission of radioactive waste management during the critical cleanup project.

Stationed on the remote atoll, David's work embodied sacrifice and perseverance, as he managed the cleanup of the nuclear test site, ensuring that future generations would be safe. Despite the perilous conditions and immense challenges, he faced his duties with an unwavering sense of purpose, reflecting the deep values that guided his military service.

After two years of commitment, David was honorably discharged in 1978, carrying with him the profound experiences of his time in the service.

Outside of his military career, David was a man who thrived in nature. His love for the outdoors shone through in his passion for hunting, fishing, and camping. A self-proclaimed cribbage master, he cherished the camaraderie of games with friends and loved to spin tales that captured the imaginations of those around him. His fondness for Westerns and storytelling with his good friend, Ron, highlighted his joy in life's simple pleasures.

Family was at the heart of David's life. A devoted father to his children—Jimmy, Christopher, Stephanie, and Joe—he found joy in the laughter of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His unwavering support and love created a lasting legacy of familial bonds, one that would endure through generations. For David, family was his greatest treasure, and the memories he created with them are cherished by those who remain.

David A. Bombard’s life came to a close on March 28, 2022, but his legacy lives on through the hearts of his loved ones. He was laid to rest with a full military salute at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a man who embodied the highest values of duty, honor, and sacrifice. His story serves as a reminder of the lasting impact that a life of service can have on those around us, both in the quiet corners of Wisconsin and beyond.
