RIP Honor Atomic Veteran Dr. John Alden Auxier

Pioneering Nuclear Health Physics and Lifelong Dedication to Service


Dr. John Alden Auxier, born October 7, 1925, in Paintsville, Kentucky, was a man of duty, service, and commitment. After serving as a fighter pilot during World War II, he pursued an impressive academic journey, earning a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering and making groundbreaking contributions to radiation safety and health physics. His expertise played a pivotal role in the cleanup of Enewetak Atoll, where he assisted in hazardous nuclear cleanup operations, exemplifying his dedication to science and humanity.


Dr. Auxier’s career spanned many vital projects, including serving on the President’s Commission for the Three Mile Island accident and consulting for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation of Japan.


His role in establishing the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge in 2010 demonstrated his deep compassion for others, further cementing his legacy as a scientist, leader, and humanitarian.


In addition to his numerous professional achievements, Dr. Auxier’s establishment of Auxier & Associates Inc. reflected his enduring commitment to radiological health and environmental safety. His contributions earned him honors such as the Engineering Hall of Fame induction at the Georgia Institute of Technology and an Honorary Doctorate from Berea College, where his journey began.


Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Auxier authored critical papers on nuclear safety, health physics, and radiation research, contributing significantly to our understanding of the biological impacts of radiation. His involvement with the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) and other advisory roles reflected the breadth of his impact on public health.
