RIP Honor Atomic Veteran William Elwood “Curly Bill” Stevens Sr.

In Mexico, New York, William Elwood Stevens Sr., affectionately known as Curly Bill, embodied the virtues of duty, honor, and commitment throughout his extraordinary life. Born on November 25, 1928, he served in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1950, becoming an atomic veteran after participating in Operation Sandstone and the nuclear cleanup of Enewetak and Bikini Atoll.


Curly Bill was not only a dedicated soldier but a loving husband and father, sharing 66 beautiful years with his wife Shirley Jean and providing unwavering guidance to his five children and extended family. His life reflected a deep connection to nature, particularly through his passion for hunting, angling, and animal husbandry, where he nurtured white-faced Herefords with care and love.
