RIP In Loving Memory of Jeffrey R. Larson: A Life Well Lived; A Legacy Well Left

"It’s not the destination, it’s the journey."

Jeffrey R. Larson, born November 9, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, lived a life of love, dedication, and resilience until his peaceful passing on December 4, 2023, at the age of 68. Raised in Bemidji, Jeff cherished the outdoors, fast cars, and the joy of family gatherings. A graduate of Bemidji High School in 1974 and trained as an automotive machinist, Jeff's life was marked by adventure, service to his country, and an unwavering spirit. His service in the United States Army included time on the Enewetak Atoll for the nuclear clean-up project, where he contributed despite the dangers of radiation exposure. Throughout his life, Jeff cultivated enduring friendships, cherished family moments, and faced life’s challenges with peace, humor, and determination.

Jeff Larson’s life was a testament to resilience and dedication. From his earliest days spent riding bikes around Lake Bemidji and logging in trees with his father, Jeff embodied a spirit of adventure and hard work. He carried this spirit into his military service, enlisting in 1977 with the intention of serving alongside his best friend on the “Buddy Plan.” Though the plan didn’t unfold as intended, Jeff took to basic training at Fort Dix and later served in Hawaii and on the Enewetak Atoll, where he participated in the monumental task of nuclear clean-up, working under extreme conditions that left many veterans with health complications.

After his service, Jeff found new paths through life, building strong roots with his first family in Colorado and later returning to Minnesota, where his love of the outdoors blossomed further at the family cabin in Bemidji. With laughter around campfires and cherished deer hunts, Jeff brought people together, making every gathering a memorable experience. A chance encounter with Marilee in 1996 would change his life, blending their families and creating a partnership that would be a beacon of love and adventure. Whether traveling by motorcycle to Sturgis or working to create their own wooded haven at home, Jeff embraced life’s journey with joy.

Though life brought challenges, including a career change and a battle with cancer, Jeff never wavered. He and Marilee leaned on each other, living by the mantra, “just doing the best we can with what we have.” His health battles, including his diagnosis with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), were faced with courage and acceptance. Even in the most difficult moments, Jeff’s irresistible smile, sense of humor, and straightforward approach shone through. His participation in the Mayo Clinic’s PSP research program, including the donation of his brain, demonstrated his desire to leave a legacy of hope for future generations.

Jeff was a man who lent a hand whenever it was needed, never hesitating to share his wisdom or his opinion. A straight shooter with a kind heart, his presence brightened every room he entered. He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Marilee, their children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter Skylar, all of whom carry forward the spirit he embodied so fully. Jeff’s love of life and community, along with his dedication to service and family, ensured that he touched the lives of many. His legacy will be celebrated not only in memory but also in the lasting impact of his acts of kindness and service.

As we look back on Jeff’s life, we see a man who embraced each chapter with open arms, from his youthful mischief and fast cars to quiet moments spent planting trees in his later years. Jeff’s grit, generosity, and love of life will be remembered by all who knew him.

“Ride free, Jeff Larson. Your journey on this earth has come to an end, but your spirit lives on in every memory, every tree planted, and every life you touched. You faced life’s challenges with grace, strength, and a smile that could light up the darkest days. May the roads ahead be smooth, and the skies open wide for you. Until we meet again in peace, knowing you lived fully, loved deeply, and left behind a legacy that will endure. Fair winds and following seas, soldier. Your mission is complete.”
