RIP Tribute and Honor to Atomic Veteran of David A. Bombard: A Life of Service, Adventure, and Joy
"A Soldier, Storyteller, and Master of Cribbage, His Spirit Lives On in Our Hearts."
David A. Bombard, born May 31, 1958, lived a full and colorful life that touched the lives of everyone around him. He grew up on the family farm in Loyal, Wisconsin, where he learned the values of hard work, resilience, and loyalty that would guide him throughout his life. The son of Calvin and Gail Bombard, David’s early years were spent among family, friends, and the natural beauty of Wisconsin, a place that would always hold a special place in his heart.
David’s life took a turn of dedication and service when he joined the United States Army on November 1, 1976, embarking on a journey that would take him far from home. Trained as a Combat Engineer, David was stationed on the Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands, where he managed radioactive waste containment and clean-up in a challenging and hazardous environment. His service in the cleanup effort demonstrated his courage, commitment, and steadfastness—qualities that defined him in and beyond his military career.
David was honorably discharged on June 9, 1978, having given his all to a mission far from home, leaving a lasting impact on all who served beside him.
Returning to Wisconsin, David initially worked on the family farm in Oregon, WI, cherishing the hands-on work and connection to his roots. Over time, he took on a new trade as a carpet layer, traveling from state to state, bringing his expertise to every job and making friends along the way. David had a unique ability to make any place feel like home, and his genuine, social nature made him the life of every gathering. His easygoing personality and infectious laugh drew people in, and he quickly made lifelong friends wherever he went.
David had a love for the outdoors that was as boundless as his personality. He was happiest while hunting, fishing, and camping—immersed in the peace and thrill of nature, where he felt truly alive. Whether on the water with a fishing pole or by the campfire with friends, David’s presence brought a sense of joy and adventure. Known as a self-proclaimed “cribbage master” and an enthusiastic teller of tales, he brought his stories to life with wit and humor, creating memories that will be cherished by his family and friends.
In recent years, David found joy in watching old westerns and sharing a drink with his best friend and “drinking buddy,” Ron Bacardi. These quiet moments of friendship and laughter were as meaningful as his grand adventures. Known for his outgoing spirit and quick wit, David was always the center of attention, and his bold, larger-than-life personality turned heads wherever he went.
David’s legacy is carried on by his children, Jimmy (April) Bombard, Christopher (Lyndsey) Bombard, Stephanie (Chris) Reimer, and Joe Jones; his 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his beloved mother, Gail; brother, Scott; extended family, nieces, nephews, and many friends who were lucky enough to know him. He was preceded in death by his father, Calvin, and his sister, Lisa, whom he has now joined in rest.
David’s life will be celebrated in a time of visitation and reminiscing on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Boston Funeral Home in Stevens Point, WI. Following his wishes, he will be laid to rest in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, honored with a full military salute as a final tribute to his service and sacrifice.
“To David A. Bombard, we say farewell with love and gratitude. Your laughter, your stories, and your indomitable spirit will live on in all who knew you. Thank you for your service, your friendship, and the joy you brought into this world. Rest in peace, David—you will be forever missed but never forgotten.”
