RIP Tribute and Honors: Atomic Veteran Jeffrey R. Larson

"Service in Sacrifice, Legacy in Love."

Jeffrey R. Larson, born on November 9, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, lived a life defined by duty, honor, and love. From the serene lakes of Bemidji, where he enjoyed outdoor adventures and the bond of family, to the remote shores of Enewetak Atoll, where he undertook one of the most hazardous missions of his generation, Jeff’s journey is a testament to resilience, sacrifice, and dedication.

In 1977, Jeff joined the United States Army under the “Buddy Plan” with his best friend, Howard Nord. Completing Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and stationed in Hawaii, his path eventually led to the Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. From May 1979 to October 1979, Jeff served as part of the Enewetak Clean-Up Project, a mission to restore islands scarred by nuclear testing during World War II. The mission demanded long hours under brutal heat, exposing servicemen to radiation risks, as protective gear was impractical in the extreme conditions.

Despite the challenges, Jeff’s commitment to the cleanup project never faltered. Working tirelessly, often 10-12 hours a day, six days a week, he and his comrades removed debris, addressed contamination, and undertook one of the most complex environmental restoration efforts in military history. Jeff’s role in this mission reflects his unwavering resolve, strong work ethic, and dedication to the well-being of his fellow servicemen and future generations.

Upon leaving the Army, Jeff returned home to build a life marked by resilience and love. He married Kalene Rafdahl, raising a family in Colorado with their son Tony and daughter Jana. Jeff carried the lessons of camaraderie and hard work into his civilian life, embracing challenges with the same tenacity that defined his military service. His kindness, infectious smile, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Even in the face of health challenges later in life, including Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Jeff accepted his journey with peace and dignity. His commitment to making a difference continued as he donated his brain to PSP research at the Mayo Clinic, ensuring that his story would contribute to understanding and advancing medical knowledge.

Jeffrey R. Larson’s life was one of service, sacrifice, and love—to his family, his country, and his fellow servicemen. His cotributions to the Enewetak Clean-Up Project and his enduring spirit stand as a reminder of the values that define a life well-lived. Jeff’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and the lives he touched.
