Tribute and Honors: Atomic Veteran Jeffrey G. Van Wey

"Driving Through Challenges, Delivering Restoration."

Jeffrey G. Van Wey, an E-3 Truck Driver in the United States Army, served with resilience and determination during the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project as part of C Company, 84th Engineer Battalion. From April 11, 1978, to October 11, 1978, Jeffrey’s role as a dump truck operator was instrumental in the mission to rehabilitate the atoll after years of nuclear testing.

Stationed on Lojwa Island, Jeffrey’s primary responsibility was the transportation of contaminated topsoil from Janet Island to Runit Island, where the material was contained within the Cactus Crater Dome. Each day, he loaded his dump truck with radioactive soil, drove it aboard barges or LCUs (Landing Craft Utility), and ensured its safe delivery to the designated containment site on Runit.

The repetitive yet critical nature of his work demanded focus, precision, and a commitment to maintaining safety under hazardous conditions.

The logistical complexity of transporting contaminated materials across the atoll required teamwork and meticulous coordination. Jeffrey’s work was an essential part of the larger cleanup effort, contributing directly to the containment of radioactive debris. His dedication ensured that the operation remained on schedule and adhered to the rigorous safety protocols of the mission.

Life on the atoll was far from easy. The tropical heat, long hours, and constant exposure to hazardous materials created an environment that tested both physical and mental endurance. Yet, Jeffrey and his comrades found strength in camaraderie, tackling the challenges together with a shared sense of purpose. His efforts symbolized the resilience and determination that defined the servicemembers involved in the cleanup.

Jeffrey G. Van Wey’s contributions to the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project exemplify the vital role of transportation and logistics in one of the most complex environmental restoration missions of the 20th century. His service as a dump truck operator reflects the dedication and perseverance of Atomic Veterans who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of future generations.

"Jeffrey G. Van Wey’s service during the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project highlights the importance of every role in achieving monumental goals. His commitment to transporting contaminated materials underscores the collective effort of Atomic Veterans whose sacrifices and hard work continue to inspire."
