Tribute and Honors: Atomic Veteran Ronald Ray Ulrigg
"Supervising Success, Leading with Dedication."
Ronald Ray Ulrigg, an E-5 in the United States Army, served with honor and determination during the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project as part of C Company, 84th Engineer Battalion. From February 13, 1979, to July 18, 1979, Ronald played a pivotal role as the Supervisor of Cleanup Operations on Pearl Island, a critical part of the atoll's restoration efforts.
As a 62F20 Construction Equipment Supervisor, Ronald was responsible for overseeing the removal and containment of radioactive debris from Pearl Island, ensuring that the operations were conducted safely and efficiently. His leadership was instrumental in coordinating teams and heavy equipment to address the contamination left behind by decades of nuclear testing. This role demanded not only technical expertise but also the ability to inspire and guide others in one of the most challenging environments imaginable.
The cleanup of Pearl Island was no small task. The tropical heat, long workdays, and the risks of radiation exposure required resilience and focus. Ronald’s work involved meticulous planning and execution to ensure that contaminated materials were safely transported to designated containment areas, such as Runit Island's Cactus Crater Dome. His leadership helped maintain the pace and precision of the cleanup, contributing significantly to the mission's success.
Despite the hardships, Ronald’s commitment to his role never wavered. His dedication to the safety and well-being of his team reflected his deep sense of responsibility and service. The impact of his efforts on Pearl Island extended beyond the immediate cleanup, laying the groundwork for the safe rehabilitation of the atoll for future use.
In the years following his service, Ronald faced significant health challenges, including requiring a liver transplant, a condition that underscores the lasting impact of the hazardous conditions faced by many Atomic Veterans. Despite these challenges, his story is one of resilience and strength, embodying the values that define those who served on Enewetak Atoll.
"Ronald Ray Ulrigg’s leadership and dedication during the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project exemplify the courage and commitment of Atomic Veterans. His work as Supervisor of Pearl Island’s cleanup stands as a testament to the skill, resilience, and selflessness of those who took on one of the most critical environmental restoration missions in history."
