Tribute and Honors: Atomic Veteran Timothy Jon VandenBerg

"Powering the Mission, Supporting the Legacy."

Timothy Jon VandenBerg, a proud Electrician’s Mate Fireman (EMFN) in the United States Navy, served with distinction aboard the USS Dubuque (LPD-8) during the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project. From October 5, 1978, to October 12, 1978, and later from March 1, 1979, to March 9, 1979, Timothy contributed to one of the most critical support missions in military history, ensuring the success of operations at Enewetak Atoll.

As part of the crew of the USS Dubuque, Timothy played a vital role in maintaining and repairing the small boats that transported contaminated materials between islands within the atoll. These boats were the backbone of the operation, moving radioactive debris to designated containment areas like Runit Island’s Cactus Crater. Timothy’s expertise as an electrician ensured that these vessels remained operational and reliable, safeguarding the progress of the cleanup efforts.

The USS Dubuque served as a critical support hub for the mission, providing resources, maintenance, and logistical support to the teams working tirelessly on the ground and in the waters of the Marshall Islands. Timothy’s work required precision and adaptability, as the demands of the mission often called for rapid repairs and innovative solutions to keep operations running smoothly. His contributions exemplify the essential role of Navy support crews in ensuring the mission’s overall success.

The conditions aboard the ship and at the atoll were challenging. Timothy and his fellow sailors faced long hours and the constant presence of hazardous materials. Despite these hardships, Timothy’s commitment to his duties never wavered. His work reflected the resilience and determination of those who provided the logistical backbone for the cleanup operations.

In the years following his service, Timothy has faced health challenges, including heart and kidney issues, blood pressure concerns, and sleep disorders, conditions that may be connected to his time supporting the mission at Enewetak. His perseverance in navigating these challenges is a testament to his strength and dedication, qualities that defined his service aboard the USS Dubuque.

"Timothy Jon VandenBerg’s contributions to the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project highlight the indispensable role of Navy personnel in supporting one of the most significant environmental missions in history. His dedication to repairing and maintaining critical equipment ensured the success of the operation and stands as a powerful reminder of the teamwork and sacrifice of Atomic Veterans."
