Tribute and Honors for Atomic Veteran Gary Lee Verdugo

Gary Lee Verdugo, an E-3 in the United States Army, served with the 84th Engineer Battalion during the monumental cleanup operations at Enewetak Atoll. From June 20, 1979, to December 23, 1979, Gary's service embodied the resilience, dedication, and steadfast determination required for one of the most challenging missions of its time.


Stationed on Lojwa Island, Gary was part of a critical team tasked with restoring and rehabilitating the islands following years of nuclear testing. His role in the cleanup operations was physically demanding, requiring long hours under the scorching Pacific sun and amidst the remnants of a historic and hazardous mission. Gary worked with his fellow engineers to remove debris, clear contamination, and prepare the atoll for its next chapter, demonstrating unwavering commitment to a mission that demanded both physical and mental fortitude.


Every task Gary undertook, whether clearing rubble or moving contaminated material to Runit Island's Cactus Crater, played a vital part in ensuring the safety and future of the Enewetak Atoll. His contributions, alongside those of his comrades, not only reflected the enduring strength of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers but also the extraordinary resolve of those who stepped forward to tackle this demanding assignment.
