Specialist Jerry Heskett was an integral part of the 84th Engineer Battalion during a critical period of construction and cleanup efforts in the Marshall Islands. Serving primarily on Lojwa and Runit, he played multiple roles, each vital to the success and efficiency of the mission.
As a generator operator and repairman, Specialist Heskett was responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of generators that powered quarry equipment on Runit. These tasks were crucial for the continuous operation of equipment essential for the environmental cleanup projects. His expertise ensured that all equipment ran smoothly and reliably, supporting the daily operations crucial to the mission's success.
In addition to his primary role, Jerry also performed essential carpentry and masonry work, helped in constructing buildings on Runit, and drove trucks as needed. His versatility extended to Enewetak, where he rustproofed vehicles to prevent corrosion in the harsh, salty environment, and even served as a human waste barrel incineration technician, managing waste products safely and effectively.
