In honor of our brave Atomic Veterans, we pay tribute to Joseph Bermudez, a dedicated Army combat engineer whose service on Enewetak Atoll embodies the essence of duty, honor, and courage. Joseph's journey as a young soldier stationed at Lojwa in the late 1970s was marked by tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to the cleanup efforts.

As an E-1 combat engineer, Joseph operated a D5 bulldozer and engaged in manual labor, playing a crucial role in the transformation of the atoll's landscape. Despite the passage of time dimming the specifics of his service, the impact of his contributions remains vivid in the memories of those who served alongside him.

Joseph's days were filled with the grueling demands of operating heavy machinery and undertaking manual labor under the scorching sun. Yet, amidst the fatigue and challenges, he persevered with a steadfast resolve, driven by a sense of duty to his country and a commitment to the mission at hand.

His service on Enewetak Atoll exemplifies the selflessness and sacrifice of America's servicemembers, who answered the call to confront the aftermath of atomic testing and restore hope to a community ravaged by environmental devastation.
