Honoring the Legacy of Our Atomic Veterans: Keith Robert Harig
Keith Robert Harig, a dedicated Navy veteran, embarked on a noble mission of service and sacrifice during his deployments to Enewetak Atoll. As part of the dive locker team, Keith played a crucial role in the water beach cleanup efforts, working tirelessly to clear debris and scrap from the shallow waters surrounding the islands. His service, from March 2nd, 1979, to April 30th, 1979, marks a period of intensive work alongside Navy divers, where they operated six days a week for twelve hours a day aboard a Mike boat.
During his deployment, Keith's responsibilities extended beyond traditional dive work. He assisted in loading C-4 explosives onto the Mike boat for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. This task involved transporting explosives to designated areas where EOD conducted controlled blasts to clear coral in channels, preventing ships from bottoming out. Keith's role in supporting EOD operations highlights his adaptability and willingness to undertake diverse tasks in service to the cleanup mission.
Keith's deployment took him to various locations within Enewetak Atoll, including Lojwa, Medren, and Enewetak itself. Snorkeling in the waters surrounding these islands, he worked diligently to clear debris and scrap, contributing to the restoration of the marine environment. Despite the physical and logistical challenges of his duties, Keith's commitment to the cleanup efforts remained unwavering.
Although Keith does not currently seek assistance, his service in Enewetak has had a lasting impact on his life. His dedication to duty, evident in his willingness to undertake hazardous tasks for the greater good, exemplifies the spirit of selflessness that defines our nation's veterans.
Keith's story serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served in the name of duty and environmental stewardship. His legacy will endure as a testament to his bravery, commitment, and the invaluable role he played in the efforts to restore Enewetak Atoll.
