Tribute to Atomic Veteran Orville Clifford Brooks, Resilient Steward of Enewetak’s Safety

In honor of our brave Atomic Veterans - Orville Clifford Brooks, a resilient Air Force Specialist, served with dedication during the Enewetak Atoll cleanup operations. As part of the Joint Task Group, Orville’s work involved conducting radiation surveys across all the islands, a crucial task in ensuring the safety of the personnel involved in the mission. His role was vital in assessing and managing the radiation levels, thereby protecting those who worked in the decontaminated areas.

Stationed on Lojwa, Orville's responsibilities extended to multiple islands, where he and his team meticulously conducted surveys to monitor radiation exposure. The data collected by Orville and his team was essential in guiding the cleanup efforts, ensuring that operations were carried out safely and effectively. His work required precision and a deep understanding of the risks involved, making his contributions invaluable to the mission's success.

In the years following his service, Orville has faced significant health challenges, including sleep apnea, PTSD, stress-related issues, and diabetes. Despite these struggles, he has found it difficult to receive the support and recognition he deserves for his service at Enewetak. His experience highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Atomic Veterans in accessing the care and assistance they need.

Orville's story is a powerful reminder of the resilience and dedication of those who served at Enewetak. Despite the lack of recognition, he continues to advocate for himself and others who served in similar capacities, demonstrating the same strength and perseverance that defined his service.

As we honor Orville Clifford Brooks's service, we acknowledge the critical role he played in ensuring the safety of the Enewetak cleanup mission. His work as a Radiation Surveyor was essential to the success of the operation, and his legacy as a dedicated Air Force Specialist will always be remembered.
