In honor of Richard Alfred Bland, a resilient Army veteran who served his country with honor and courage during his deployment to Enewetak Atoll. Stationed with the 84th Engineer Battalion, Richard played a vital role in logistical operations, demonstrating his versatility and dedication to the mission. His contributions were crucial to the overall success of the cleanup and reconstruction efforts, marking his service as both impactful and memorable.


Assigned as the Supply Room Driver on Lojwa, Richard ensured the timely delivery of essential supplies to support the cleanup efforts on the atoll. His role was pivotal in maintaining the logistical backbone of the operation, providing his fellow servicemembers with the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively. Every delivery he made contributed to the smooth functioning of the mission, ensuring that no task was delayed due to a lack of supplies.


Transitioning to Enewetak, Richard continued his service as the Prime Mover operator, showcasing his proficiency in handling heavy equipment crucial for the cleanup and reconstruction efforts. Operating the Prime Mover and the Pettibone Forklift, he facilitated the transportation of trailers and tankers, contributing significantly to the mission's success. His skill in maneuvering these large vehicles through challenging terrain was indispensable, ensuring that the essential equipment and materials were where they needed to be, when they needed to be there.


During his deployment, Richard faced adversity when he was temporarily left in Guam after the evacuation prompted by a typhoon. Despite this challenge, he remained steadfast and resilient, embodying the spirit of a dedicated soldier committed to the mission's success. This experience highlighted his adaptability and determination, qualities that served him well throughout his military career.


Richard's service on Enewetak Atoll left a lasting impact, but it also took a toll on his health. Having undergone two hip replacements, Richard struggles with sore muscles, raising concerns about potential radiation exposure as a contributing factor to his health issues. Despite these challenges, Richard’s spirit remains unbroken, and he continues to exemplify the resilience that defined his time in service.


Despite the hardships he endured, Richard remains resilient and determined. His selfless dedication to duty and sacrifice for his country exemplify the values of the American military, and his unwavering commitment to service is a source of inspiration to all who know him. His journey is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve, and the enduring strength they carry long after their time in uniform has ended.
