In honor of our brave Atomic Veterans, we pay tribute to Roger Ray Black, a dedicated Navy serviceman whose service at Enewetak Atoll exemplifies courage, commitment, and selflessness. Roger's contributions during his tours at Enewetak were pivotal to the success of the cleanup efforts, demonstrating leadership and expertise that left a lasting impact on this critical mission.


During his first tour, Roger played a crucial role in moving aggregate from Enjebi to Lojwa for the construction of the forward base camp. Braving the elements and working tirelessly, Roger and his team operated a landing craft loaded with aggregate, ensuring essential materials reached their destination efficiently and safely. His efforts were vital in establishing the infrastructure necessary for the continued success of the cleanup operations.


In his second tour, Roger assumed the role of Assistant Officer-in-Charge and Craftmaster of Mash-3, an Army Landing Craft Utility. His responsibilities included transporting materials from the cleanup site to designated locations, significantly contributing to the logistical success of the cleanup efforts. Roger's expertise in managing transportation and logistics ensured that the mission's objectives were met with precision and reliability.


Roger's dedication to duty was further evidenced during the atoll evacuation prompted by a typhoon. He played a vital role in evacuating over 300 personnel from Lojwa to Enewetak, demonstrating exceptional leadership and resolve amidst challenging conditions. His ability to navigate such a critical situation underscored his commitment to the safety and well-being of his fellow servicemembers.


Beyond his operational duties, Roger's commitment to documenting his part in the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project reflects his sense of duty and accountability. His desire to ensure his contributions are recognized underscores his unwavering dedication to the mission and his fellow servicemembers. Roger's meticulous record-keeping serves as a testament to his belief in the importance of this mission and the legacy it represents.


Though Roger's service at Enewetak came with its challenges, he continues to exhibit resilience and fortitude. Despite facing the typical health issues that come with age, Roger remains steadfast in his commitment to preserving the legacy of the cleanup project and ensuring that future generations understand the sacrifices made in service to their country.
