A Tribute and Honor to Atomic Veteran Daniel Joseph West: A Living Tribute to a Veteran of the Enewetak Atoll Mission
"A Life of Service, A Legacy of Strength."
Daniel Joseph West, BM3/E-4 in the United States Navy, served with dedication and resilience aboard the USS Frederick (LST-1184) as part of the mission to support the Enewetak Atoll clean-up operation.
In May 1977, Daniel and his crew played a critical role in delivering equipment and supplies to Enewetak, contributing to one of the most challenging environmental rehabilitation efforts of its time.
Though his time on Enewetak was brief, his contribution to this mission was invaluable, supporting a task that would impact the safety of generations to come.
As a Boatswain's Mate in the Deck Department, Daniel handled the on-load and off-load of essential supplies and equipment. His work required precision, skill, and an unwavering commitment to the mission. The Enewetak clean-up effort, aimed at rehabilitating an island impacted by nuclear testing, was a task filled with unseen risks. Daniel’s service in this mission reflected the Navy’s call to duty, courage, and the willingness to take on challenges that others might shy away from.
The legacy of this service did not come without sacrifice. Years after his service, Daniel faced a series of health challenges, including kidney cancer, prostate cancer, a stroke, and anxiety, likely connected to the radiation exposure and conditions faced at Enewetak. Despite his efforts, the recognition of his service at Enewetak by the VA was initially overlooked. Only after years of appeals, with the support of legal advocacy, was his role in this mission acknowledged, though still not directly tied to the Enewetak clean-up by official records. Daniel’s perseverance in seeking the recognition and support he deserved mirrors his resilience and dedication, a continuation of the same spirit he demonstrated during his service.
Today, we honor Daniel not only for his role in the Enewetak mission but for his enduring resilience in the face of post-service challenges. His journey serves as a powerful reminder of the long-lasting impact military service can have on veterans and the importance of standing up for the care and recognition they deserve. His story represents the countless veterans who have had to fight twice—once for their country and once for the acknowledgment of their sacrifices.
Daniel Joseph West’s name stands proudly on this roster as a living testament to his courage, dedication, and the quiet strength with which he has faced his journey. His service, both on the USS Frederick and beyond, is a legacy that will not be forgotten. We thank him for his contributions, his perseverance, and his spirit, honoring him today as both a veteran and an inspiration.
“Thank you, Daniel Joseph West, for your service to your country, for your commitment to the Enewetak mission, and for the strength you continue to show. Your legacy is a beacon of resilience and dedication, inspiring all who understand the true weight of service. We honor you, Daniel, as a veteran, a brother, and a hero. May your journey be filled with the respect and recognition you so rightfully deserve.”
