Tribute and Honor for Atomic Veteran Bryan Keith Butterfield

Bryan Keith Butterfield, an E-4 in the United States Army, served with steadfast dedication as a 61B10 Seaman during his deployment to Enewetak Atoll. From June 20, 1977, to September 20, 2017, Bryan worked tirelessly with the 309th Transportation Battalion, playing a pivotal role in the cleanup efforts following years of nuclear testing.

Stationed on Lojwa Island, Bryan’s primary responsibility was the transportation of radioactive waste to the YC barge, a critical operation in safely consolidating and containing contaminated materials. This work required precision and vigilance, as the stakes were high in ensuring the safe handling of hazardous materials. Bryan’s routes took him across multiple islands, including Runit, Lojwa, Sally, and others whose names have faded from memory but remain etched in the story of his service.
