Living Tribute to Atomic Veteran Craig A. Wagner: Engineered Dedication on Enewetak Atoll

"Powering the Mission, Strengthening the Legacy."

Craig A. Wagner, a Navy E-5 Engineman, served with skill and dedication during the Enewetak Atoll cleanup mission as part of Assault Craft Unit 1 from March 13, 1978, to September 12, 1978. His expertise in engineering and mechanics played a vital role in supporting the complex and demanding operations required to rehabilitate the atoll.

Craig’s primary duties included serving as a boat engineer on Maggie 3 and Mike 8 landing crafts, which were essential to transporting equipment and contaminated debris to Runit Island for containment in the Cactus Crater Dome.

His responsibilities extended beyond transportation, requiring him to oversee the maintenance and functionality of the vessels under his care. Navigating challenging waters and managing heavy loads, Craig’s skill ensured that these critical missions were completed safely and efficiently.

His technical knowledge extended further, as Craig also undertook diesel overhauls for landing crafts, ensuring these vital vessels remained operational in the harsh environment of the South Pacific. Drawing from his prior experience with fiberglass hulls and inboard/outboard engines, Craig repaired Boston Whalers used in the cleanup effort, showcasing his versatility and problem-solving abilities.

Craig’s work took him beyond Enewetak to Runit Island and several other locations, where his contributions were integral to the mission’s progress. Whether hauling debris, repairing equipment, or ensuring the reliability of the fleet, his dedication and expertise were indispensable to the success of the operation.

Craig A. Wagner’s service during the Enewetak Atoll cleanup mission exemplifies the resilience, adaptability, and technical skill required of those who served in this historic effort. His contributions highlight the critical role of engineers in overcoming logistical challenges and ensuring the smooth execution of one of the most demanding cleanup operations in military history.
