Living Tribute to Atomic Veteran Steven Lee Walkerow: A Hands-On Commitment to Enewetak
"From Shore to Supply, A Mission of Dedication."
Steven Lee Walkerow, an Army E-2, served with dedication during the Enewetak Atoll cleanup mission from April 5, 1979, to August 29, 1979, as part of the 84th Engineer Battalion. His work spanned multiple crucial roles, from managing supply logistics to physically clearing contaminated debris, contributing significantly to the historic cleanup effort.
Steven’s responsibilities included handling Class 9 truck and helicopter parts, ensuring serviceable equipment was available for the mission while managing unserviceable parts for disposal.
His logistical expertise kept vital operations running smoothly, underscoring the essential role of supply management in a challenging environment like Enewetak Atoll.
Beyond his work in supply, Steven participated in special details that brought him directly to the heart of the mission. On Runit Island, near the iconic Cactus Crater Dome, Steven and a team of 25-30 servicemen undertook the grueling task of physically collecting contaminated metal debris from the reef, referred to as “The Hot Island.” These items were placed on the beach for pickup, a critical step in containing radioactive material. Steven vividly recalls walking along the reef and shore, the dome just a stone’s throw away—a memory captured in photographs he took during the mission.
Steven’s contributions extended to maintaining work vehicles and equipment essential to the cleanup. His efforts ensured that the tools of the operation were ready for the challenging tasks ahead, a testament to his adaptability and commitment. His role, both on the reef and behind the scenes, was vital to the mission’s success.
Though Steven reports no lasting health effects from his time on Enewetak, his work in such a hazardous and historic operation reflects the resilience and dedication of all who served there. His service highlights the critical importance of both logistics and physical labor in addressing one of the most significant environmental challenges of its time.
To Steven Lee Walkerow, we honor your service, your adaptability, and your contributions to the Enewetak cleanup mission. From managing essential supplies to physically clearing debris from the reef, your dedication exemplifies the strength and commitment of our Atomic Veterans. Thank you for your service and for being part of a mission that continues to inspire respect and gratitude.
