RIP In Memory of Atomic Veteran Hence F. Brank Jr.: A Legacy of Service and Compassion

Hence F. Brank Jr., affectionately known as “Doc,” “Major,” and “The Bicycle Man,” passed away on December 15, 2023, at the Nashville VA Medical Center, following a brief battle with cancer. At the age of 79, Hence leaves behind a legacy defined by his selfless service, profound kindness, and unwavering dedication to his country, including his pivotal role in the historic Enewetak Atoll cleanup mission.
Born on June 27, 1944, in Henderson County, Kentucky, Hence pursued a life of excellence in both academics and service. He graduated from Douglas High School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of Kentucky, and later achieved his M.D. degree from the University of Louisville in 1976 while actively serving in the Air Force.
Hence’s military career spanned 13 years of active duty, during which he reached the rank of Major and became a certified Air Force Flight Surgeon.
As a navigator on B-52 combat crews during the Vietnam War, he demonstrated exemplary dedication to his mission. However, one of the most profound chapters of his career was his deployment to Enewetak Atoll in the South Pacific, where he served as a physician for both military personnel and civilians during the nuclear cleanup mission.
At Enewetak, Hence’s role went beyond medical care. He was a lifeline for those working under grueling and hazardous conditions to rehabilitate the atoll after years of nuclear testing. His compassion and skill ensured the well-being of those around him, providing a steady hand and a kind heart during one of the most significant environmental restoration efforts in history. His service at Enewetak remains a testament to his courage and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on all who worked alongside him.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Hence was a man of profound intellect, kindness, and humility. Known for his curiosity and passion for learning, he studied the Bible and engaged in deep discussions with those around him. His gentle nature and selflessness were evident in every aspect of his life, making him a cherished friend, mentor, and family member.
Hence was preceded in death by his parents, Anna (Brooks) Brank and Hence F. Brank Sr., as well as his brothers, Levin Brank and Henry Lewis Brank. He is survived by his beloved daughter Elizabeth Ann Brank, his sister Anna Cole Brank, brother-in-law James Cole, ex-wife Patricia Hughes, and a host of nephews, nieces, family, and friends who will deeply miss his presence.
