RIP In Memory of Atomic Veteran Robert E. "Bob" Smith: A Legacy of Service and Dedication

Robert Earl “Bob” Smith, born November 29, 1941, in Floresville, TX, dedicated his life to service, resilience, and the betterment of those around him. On January 15, 2012, Bob passed away at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy defined by his unwavering commitment to his country, family, and community.


Bob’s military career as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer (SFC, E-7) in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was one of remarkable dedication, spanning multiple tours and significant missions.


Among his many accomplishments, Bob’s service on Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands stands out as a testament to his expertise and determination. Tasked with the monumental challenge of rehabilitating an area devastated by nuclear testing,


Bob played a crucial role in the cleanup and reconstruction efforts.


As part of this historic operation, Bob worked tirelessly to remove radioactive debris, build safe infrastructure, and restore the atoll to ensure the safety of future generations. His skills as a construction engineer were essential in creating solutions under extreme conditions, and his leadership inspired those who worked alongside him. This mission required not only technical acumen but also immense courage, as the risks of radiation exposure and the harsh Pacific environment posed constant threats. Bob’s contributions to the Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project are a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemen and women to protect and restore lives and lands affected by the nuclear age.


Bob’s military career also included three tours of duty during the Vietnam War, further highlighting his bravery and commitment to his country. After retiring in 1985, he continued to demonstrate his work ethic and dedication as a truck driver for Keim Transportation of Sabetha, KS. Even in retirement, his life was guided by the same principles of perseverance and service that defined his military tenure.


Beyond his professional achievements, Bob was a devoted family man and an active member of his community. He was a proud member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lee Pierson Post #1786, and the American Legion. He valued his time with family, cherished his role as a husband, father, and grandfather, and found joy in the lives of his children and grandchildren.


Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Ann (West) Smith, daughters Vickey L. Grochowski(partner Sheryl Siegle) and Deborah K. Wonderlich (husband Michael), sons Jarrod M. Smith (wife Tanya) and James D. Smith (wife Lana Ryland-Smith), and his five grandchildren: Samantha WonderlichSean WonderlichAlexandria RylandCalvin Smith, and Grace Smith. His sister Janice E. Creech of Austin, TX, also survives him. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Annie Pauline (Dickey) and Robert Lee Smith, an infant brother, and brother-in-law Robert Creech.
