"A Life Well Lived, A Legacy of Service and Discovery."
Daniel J. O’Connor, born March 28, 1952, brought a love of service, learning, and exploration to everything he did. The second of nine children, Dan’s life was filled with family, curiosity, and dedication. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Dan served as an environmental health specialist, with assignments that took him from Vandenberg AFB in California and Hickam AFB in Hawaii to Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands and Grissom AFB in Indiana. His military career reflected his commitment to protecting others, ensuring safe environments wherever he was stationed.
After his service, Dan’s passion for environmental health led him to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science in Public Health from the IUPUI School of Public and Environmental Affairs. He went on to make a significant impact at the Marion County Health Department as a hazardous materials specialist, later becoming the manager for environment, health, and safety at Keihin IPT Corp. in Greenfield.
Dan’s dedication to health and safety enriched his community, contributing to safer workplaces and better environmental practices.
Dan’s curiosity and creativity extended far beyond his professional life. One of the early geocachers in Indianapolis, he was known by his nickname “muirwoody” and was celebrated for his innovative hiding spots, as featured in Indianapolis Monthly in 2006. He was an avid bicyclist, a lifelong reader, and an excellent photographer who captured the beauty of nature and urban landscapes alike.
His love for wildlife led him to create backyard habitats, a reflection of his deep connection to the natural world. Dan also enjoyed collecting and showcasing vintage electronics on his popular YouTube channel, sharing his passion with several thousand subscribers.
Dan’s legacy lives on in his beloved family, including his eight siblings: Michael, Anne, Jane, Tom, Maureen, Brian, Caroline, and Patrick, as well as his nieces and nephews. His love for his family, his dedication to environmental health, and his joy in life’s adventures have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
