Tribute and Honors: Atomic Veteran Robert J. Everhart
"Honor in Service, Legacy in Sacrifice."
Robert J. Everhart, an Army veteran, served with distinction on Enewetak Atoll from May 1979 to October 1979 during the historic cleanup operation. As an E-4 Welder and Body Fender Repairman,
Robert’s role was critical to maintaining and repairing the equipment that powered the mission. His technical skills ensured that the machinery and vehicles essential to the cleanup efforts remained operational, enabling the safe and efficient progress of this monumental task.
Stationed primarily on Lojwa Island, Robert frequently worked on Runit Island, enduring the relentless heat of the Pacific, where temperatures often soared above 100 degrees. The demands of the mission were unrelenting, with 10-12 hour workdays, six days a week. Yet, despite the grueling conditions, Robert and his fellow servicemembers found strength in their camaraderie, the shared sense of purpose, and moments of respite such as Saturday night gatherings. Their teamwork and resilience were the foundation of the mission's success.
Beyond his contributions to the cleanup effort, Robert’s story reflects a life rich in experiences and dedication. After his time in the military, he transitioned into a 32-year career as an NDT Technician and Welding Inspector, living in Maine and Massachusetts before retiring in South Carolina. His personal passions include fishing, golfing, bowling, playing guitars, and home-brewing beer. He cherishes moments with family and embraces hobbies that bring him joy and relaxation.
Like many Atomic Veterans, Robert continues to face health challenges stemming from his service. He manages conditions such as arthritis, vision loss, and sleep apnea and has taken steps to seek assistance through the PACT Act with the VA. His ongoing resilience and willingness to share his story demonstrate his strength and commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of Enewetak veterans are recognized and remembered.
Robert J. Everhart’s contributions to the Enewetak Atoll cleanup mission are a testament to the critical roles played by every servicemember involved. His experiences, both during his service and throughout his life, embody the enduring spirit of Atomic Veterans—resilient, resourceful, and committed to leaving a lasting legacy.
