Tribute to Atomic Veteran George S. Williams III, Dedicated Air Force Calibration Technician
In honor of our brave Atomic Veterans - George S. Williams III, a dedicated member of the U.S. Air Force, served with professionalism and expertise during his deployment to Enewetak Atoll. As an E-05 PMEL (Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory) Calibration Technician, George played a vital role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the radiation monitoring equipment used during the cleanup operations.
From May 1, 1979, to September 1, 1979, George was stationed at Lojwa, where his primary responsibility was calibrating the Radiac equipment that measured the radiation exposure levels of the troops working on Runit Island. His work was critical in providing accurate readings, which were essential for the safety and well-being of the personnel involved in the mission.
Throughout his service, George demonstrated unwavering commitment to his duties, ensuring that the equipment used to protect his fellow servicemen was functioning correctly and reliably. His contributions were a key component in maintaining the safety standards necessary for the challenging environment at Enewetak.
After his service, George faced some health issues, though none could be directly linked to his exposure to radiation. He has since enrolled in the VA health system, utilizing both his Vietnam Agent Orange exposure and his Enewetak radiation exposure as part of his health care plan. As part of this process, he was enrolled in the Agent Orange/Radiation Exposure Registries and underwent a series of tests consistent with his previous medical evaluations. Currently retired from the military, George is covered under TRICARE and continues to monitor his health.
George S. Williams III’s service is a testament to the crucial behind-the-scenes roles that ensure the success and safety of military operations. His dedication to his work as a calibration technician contributed significantly to the overall mission at Enewetak, and his story serves as a reminder of the importance of every role in such critical operations.
As we honor George’s service, we acknowledge the vital contributions he made during his time at Enewetak. His commitment to accuracy and safety ensured that his fellow servicemen were protected during one of the most challenging missions in military history. George’s legacy as a dedicated Air Force Calibration Technician will always be remembered and respected.
